He was a skilled swimmer who frequently saved people from drowning. Aikau began his career as a lifeguard and surf instructor in Hawaii due to his passion for surfing and Hawaiian culture. The money that he earned allowed him to purchase his first surfboard. When Aikau was 16, he dropped out of high school to help support his family while working at a Dole pineapple cannery. When he was eleven years old, an advertisement for surf lessons appeared in a local newspaper, and he signed up for it. Aikau, who was his elder brother Richard’s best friend, spent many hours at the beach with him.
